Eric Liew
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
With 26 years of experience, Eric has handled a broad spectrum of general litigation, specializing in matrimonial, criminology, military court martial cases, contract, tort, wills and probate matters. His extensive knowledge and strategic approach make him a highly reputable and sought-after lawyer in these complex areas.
FAMILY CASES
Eric provides expert legal advice on resolving matrimonial disputes, including nullity of marriages, guiding clients through the legal process while safeguarding their interests. He has successfully handled multi-million-dollar matrimonial disputes, taking decisive measures such as freezing assets to prevent dissipation and filing cross-border stay of proceedings applications. In a recent high-value case, he secured a favourable settlement through mediation, ensuring both parties reached a mutually satisfactory resolution.
Recognising that matrimonial disputes often involve complex financial entanglements; Eric adopts a commercial mindset and practical approach. He collaborates closely with the commercial litigation team, led by Mr. Shankar and his team, to protect clients’ financial assets and ensure equitable distribution while avoiding lengthy litigation, aligning with the Family Court’s therapeutic justice approach.
When third-party rights—such as those of parents or siblings—are at stake in a matrimonial dispute, Eric has successfully advised clients on Supreme Court applications to safeguard third-party assets from being unfairly absorbed into
matrimonial property division. In a recent multi-million-dollar case, he advised on third party’s interest in company shares, ensuring that a declaration of trust was properly executed to reflect equitable ownership. Eric also successfully mediated and settled an SGD 70 million matrimonial dispute, spanning various jurisdictions.
Eric is also committed to ensuring that children and spouses receive adequate
maintenance support, both before and after divorce. His meticulous approach ensures fair financial claims, preventing either party from being unfairly disadvantaged.
In cross-border family disputes, Eric recently handled an international child abduction case in which a child was unlawfully taken from China to Singapore and from Singapore to Thailand. He swiftly sought a mirror order to enforce a foreign court’s ruling, working closely with international lawyers to provide a practical and enforceable solution. He frequently works with foreign legal teams to ensure seamless resolution of cross-border family disputes, taking into account cross-border laws for global resolution of mediation. Eric also works with China lawyers, to assist with both assets in Singapore and China, as well as cross-border enforcement of judgements.
In disputes over the care and control of children, Eric has also litigated and mediated countless cases involving disputing parents, in the process of divorce proceedings,
including access to the children where one parent has taken custody of and denying the other parent of their natural rights to their children.
Eric liaises with Singapore immigration authorities in family disputes involving
immigration concerns, ensuring his clients’ legal and residency status remain secure throughout the legal process.
When disputes involve high-value assets, Eric collaborates closely with valuers to assess and determine the true value of company assets and property in Singapore and internationally. Working alongside the commercial team led by Mr. Shankar, he ensures that company shares are accurately valued using appropriate methodologies, helping clients secure their rightful financial interests.
Eric also advises clients on pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, safeguarding their financial and legal rights before and during marriage.
Additionally, he assists families in court applications to protect vulnerable individuals with mental capacity issues, particularly where there is a risk of financial exploitation. If assets belonging to an individual lacking mental or physical capacity have been improperly disposed of, Eric takes legal action to set aside such transactions, ensuring justice. These cases require a delicate balance of trust law and civil procedure, areas in which Eric has significant expertise.
CRIMINAL CASES
With extensive experience in criminal defence, Eric represents clients facing serious offences such as drug trafficking, rape, unlawful assembly, and aggravated molestation at both the State and Supreme Court levels. He also handles reckless and drunk driving cases resulting in serious injuries, as well as court-martial cases involving breaches of military law, including drug consumption and indecent exposure within detention barracks.
